2/12/10 – 2/14/10 The San Diego Ballet Company, under the leadership of co-directors Robin Sherertz-Morgan and Javier Velasco, celebrates its 2009-2010 Season, with the return of last year’s world premiere production of… Romeo et Juliet. By Sergei Prokofiev February 12 & 13, 2010 at 8:00 pm February 13 & 14, 2010 at 2:30 pm Lyceum Theatre, Horton Plaza, San Diego Directed and Choreographed by Javier Velasco “romantic… assured… expressive… seductive. Velasco mixes things up with the skill of a master chef… making it taste divine.” – San Diego Union-Tribune Romeo and Juliet will utilize a cast of 18 and feature San Diego Ballet principal dancers Abby Avery and Carlo Di Dio as Juliet and Romeo. Says Velasco, “Romeo and Juliet is hardly a novel idea for a ballet. I wanted to make sure that in my version of the piece, I was creating more of what Romeo and Juliet has come to mean to us. Meaning, I wanted to focus on the intimacy of two young people in love… something as fast and fleeting as that first, sudden, sensation of passion and desire.” Javier Velasco has been hailed by the San Diego Union-Tribune as “San Diego’s answer to Jerome Robbins” and was listed among people to watch in the art and theater scene by San Diego Magazine. He has supplied dances for productions at the La Jolla Playhouse, Old Globe and has a long-standing relationship with the San Diego Repertory Theatre, where he has directed and choreographed productions of A Christmas Carol, Cabaret and Suds, and many others. He currently serves as artistic director of the San Diego Ballet having created over 50 original pieces for the company since it’s inception. His ballet set to the poems of Kenneth Fearing, Love: 20 Cents the First Quarter-Mile, was given the award for Best Choreography by the San Diego Dance Alliance, the third time he has been honored by the organization. San Diego Ballet is a 20-year-old organization dedicated to bringing the finest quality dance productions to San Diego. Our studios are located at Dance Place San Diego 2650 Truxtun Road, at the NTC Promenade in Point Loma. For further information, call (619) 294-7378. E-mail: sandiegoballet@aol.com.
